Digital Imaging Specialist with Electronic PreMedia Experience

SUMMARY

  • Performs all duties related to color separation, image manipulation, and color proofing. Also should able to manage electronic files as they pass through PreMedia and into production by doing some or all of the following processes listed below:
  • Preflight files to ensure electronic file(s) represent what was estimated, ensure process capability of the file(s) and manage access to the file(s).
  • Plan job, creating layout for press based on job ticket specifications, estimating standards and production equipment capabilities.
  • Electronically assemble and prep file(s) for output.
  • Output and mock-up proof(s), based on ticket instructions, using a variety of proofing systems, for customer approval.
  • Plate jobs for press once customer approval has been received.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Include but are not limited to the following.
  • Reports time and material consumption accurately.
  • Preserves and passes along customer artwork in clean and undamaged condition.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean.
  • Obeys company rules and observes all safety regulations.
  • Maintains company quality standards.
  • Improves skills by learning from others and studying written procedures and instructions.
  • Limits waste of materials and supplies.
  • Takes care of equipment by following work procedures and performing required tests and maintenance.

RESPONSIBILITIES   Image Retouching/Color:

  • Set up and produce scatter proofs for customer mark up.
  • Perform high-end image retouching and/or color correction using Adobe Photoshop per customer instructions or instructions provided by Account Executive and/or Customer Service Project Manager (CSR) on behalf of the customer.
  • Output proofs as required for additional scatter rounds.

Preflight:

  • Receive/intake preflight form, including any instructions for file retrieval, supplied proofs or lasers and electronic media supplied by the customer from the Account Executive and/or Customer Service Project Manager (CSR).
  • Create a job folder and place customer supplied files on the job server.
  • Open supplied customer file and conduct a preflight. Check for number of pages, colors, page size, and font issues. Update any artwork links and save updated final document to the output folder on the jobs server.
  • Notify Account Executive and/or Customer Service Project Manager (CSR) of any file issues and record them on preflight form.
  • Print a set of low-res lasers of supplied documents, unless supplied by customer and stamp “GLS Proof” on lasers to identify them from any client supplied lasers.
  • Route completed package to Planning for layouts once ready.

Planning/Press Layouts:

  • Review the job ticket. For any necessary changes refer to Ticket Change procedure.
  • Review or create layout.
  • Inspect customer supplied components.
  • Check press counts.
  • Review concerns with Managers of applicable departments.
  • Make Account Executive and/or Customer Service Project Manager (CSR) aware of any potential issues.
  • Initiate dies, foils, emboss, etc. when needed.

File Assembly:

  • Assemble client’s electronic files, checking for trap, bleed, and font issues with Prinergy ripped files.
  • Image retouching and/or color correction when indicated.
  • Guarantees correct size.
  • Output proofs as required.

Plating:

  • Check jobs into plating area by filling out envelope label, checking for postal approval and adding approved proofs, and ticket information to job envelope.
  • Operates and maintains plate processor.
  • Produces required plates for each job.
  • Replenishes chemicals in plate processor.
  • Delivers plates to press.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 + years retouching in a studio environment Associates degree in Graphic arts or related field preferred.
  • On-the-job training for one year under the direction of an experienced electronic prepress operator and/or the department supervisor using a prepress training matrix.
  • Are extremely attentive to detail, highly organized and able to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Must have strong knowledge/experience in Photoshop retouching and color correction with a keen eye for detail and aesthetics.
  • Understanding of printing and pre-press specifications.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, sales, team members, and management.
  • Able to read and understand procedures and work instructions.
  • Excellent computer skills. Experience with print based MIS systems, Adobe Creative Suite, Quark, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word, Prinergy, Kodak InSite.

Press Feeder

GLS Companies is currently accepting applications for a Full-Time Press Feeder on our multi-color Heidelberg 40” Press. This position will work 3rd shift (8 hours). This busy press requires the ability to work overtime and weekends. The duties of this position are to include but not be limited to; hanging plates, remove and gum used plates, fill ink fountains, load/unload paper, mix ink as required, perform ink wash-ups, install blankets and perform preventative maintenance on the press. This position will assist the Press Operator in all phases of press operations.   High School diploma and 2-3 years of Press Feeder Experience on a Heidelberg 40” press is a must. An education in Printing is a plus.

Web Press Operator

**5+ years running 4C+ web press required**   GLS Companies is currently seeking two experienced Web Press operators to join our team at our St. Paul facility.   JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Ability to correctly make ready press from information on job ticket.
  • Correctly match press sheets to color proof.
  • Relate specific job duties to crew members.
  • Communicate to Production Manager and Plant Manager, concerns relating to specific jobs, press performance and crew performance.

**At least 1 year of web press help experience is required.**   GLS Companies is currently accepting resumes for a Web Press Helper at our St. Paul location.

  • Check ink supply at the beginning of each shift. Monitor the totes and change them before they run dry.
  • Check the Baldwin tanks once per shift.
  • Keep press chemical supplies full and plenty of rags folded on the bench.
  • Inspect sheets on the sheeter for correct side guide and cutoff position. Check for flaws in printing and alert the pressman of anything found. Make necessary adjustments to the sheeter paddles and controls so the paper is stacked as neatly as possible on skids.
  • Operating the folder, make necessary adjustments to the stackers in order to provide a tightly bundled log. Monitor signatures in the stacker to check for scuffing, marking or wrinkles that may occur.
  • Make sure there is an adequate supply of skids, strapping and waste bins.
  • Tag each skid of printed material and move to storage area.
  • Assist with wash up, hanging plates and changing blankets. Clean and lubricate ink fountains when changing colors. Check with pressman to insure the correct color is put in fountain.
  • When starting a make ready, check the layout, work on registration, cutoff and side lay position. Make sure the printed sheet matches the dylux, rule up a sheet or stitch and trip folded samples.
  • Practice good housekeeping: Keep the press clean. Wipe the units off and keep the decks and handrails clean. Empty the trash and sweep the floor daily. Clean up any spills that occur. Return any unused to the ink room at the end of each job.
  • Practice safe work habits. Understand and follow company and industry safety rules. Wear appropriate safety equipment. Report any unsafe equipment or conditions to your supervisor.
  • Follows instructions carefully and accurately.
  • Suggests improvements in work practices.
  • Assists in the warehouse as needed.
